Prior to Christmas, I took a large load of "stuff" to The Salvation Army. I had a large suitcase, a small suitcase, and another smaller bag full. It was more than I could take very far on foot, so I just walked to the end of my block and hailed a cab. It ended up being the most random/funny cab experience I've had yet!
I gave the cabbie the address and I could tell he was a bit disappointed I was not headed to the aiport with all that stuff (they like those long distance cab fares)! He asked if I was moving. I told him I was not, but that I was cleaning out my place and taking things to The Salavation Army.
The cabbie began to snack on some cherries and grapes he had and asked me if I wanted some. I thought that was hilarious, but of course did not take any. He asked me if I was afraid to eat his food! Haha - yes, I was kind of weirded out at the thought of eating a cabbie's food, in a cab (gross!). But, I just told him I had my work Holiday party that day and had eaten a lot (it was true!).
As we get close to The Salavation Army, he asks if I want him to wait to take me back home. It was true that I would need a cab ride back home with the empty suitcases, but we thought about it and decided I might be inside too long for him to bother waiting...I could easily catch another cab. He agreed.
As we stopped, I checked the meter and it was about $6.50...I only had $6 and said I'd have to charge it. He told me not to worry about it! Have you ever heard of such a thing? He not only was shorted $0.50 in cab fare, but also got no tip. I gave happily gave him my $6!
When he let me out we were on the wrong side of the road, but he parked his cab, got out, and not only unloaded my bags from the back, but ran them across the street for me! And he had to dodge all kinds of traffic to do so and I tried to follow him and wound up in the middle of the street with traffic flowing on both sides of me and him screaming at me to be careful - crazy!
I made it across and went in the Salvation Army and it took a few minutes for me to unload everything and get my receipt. When I walked back outside, my cabbie was still sitting across the street and he started honking and waving at me and did a big U-turn in the middle of the street to get back over to me and pick me up. I was a little weirded out at this point -- was he being nice or was he being creepy? I let him take me most of the way home, but I didn't feel good about him seeing where I lived so I had him drop me at the corner.
What a random cab ride!
